LAYERS

LAYERS is a two-part conceptual art piece, developed for the 3rd Nieuwstraat Festival—a festival of “unnoticed” art in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, in which volunteers publicly perform instructions or ‘scores’ from selected international artists. As a companion piece, a snail mail campaign was launched to further explore the theme of layers by inviting the creation of identity rituals and interpersonal connection.
The Score
LAYERS is an exploration of vulnerability, propriety, and liberation, inspired by an unassuming woman who stopped to fully change from one pair of pants into another on the sidewalks of New York’s 5th Ave.
“I had the impression that I was telling a story without a beginning or an end. No one paid any attention to it, as if it were perfectly normal for someone to undress in the street. It was a nice feeling, slightly crazy for a brief moment.”
